Student support for postgraduate taught students. Individual meetings During the taught part of your degree programme your School will schedule meetings with your Personal Tutor to enable you to settle in and support your development as a member of your subject area’s academic community. You will also have one further scheduled individual meeting with your Personal Tutor during the research part of your degree programme. There will be a one-to-one meeting with your Personal Tutor in each semester and a third at the start of the dissertation project. The first meeting will be early in Semester 1, and the second will be early in Semester 2. The one-to-one meetings are scheduled to last for 30 minutes. They may be shorter or longer than this. You will schedule your meetings with your Personal Tutor by selecting an appointment from a list of possibilities which your Personal Tutor will make available. This will be done during Induction Week before Semester 1, during the first week of Semester 2 and as soon as possible after the final examination in May. Scheduled means that a School has made a reasonable proactive attempt to arrange a meeting between a Personal Tutor and a Tutee. It is accepted that you may choose not to respond or attend the meeting. You may request an additional meeting with your Personal Tutor either directly or via email. The purpose and content of each of the one-to-one meetings is as follows: The first meeting will give you the opportunity to ask questions and receive advice to help you settle into your programme and life in Edinburgh as a PGT student. In addition, it will include initial discussions of optional course choice, particularly if your programme has optional courses in Semester 1. At the second meeting, you and your Personal Tutor will discuss the outcome of any exams taken at the end of Semester 1 and the final choice of optional courses which is the best match to your interests and abilities. The focus of the third meeting will be a discussion of the challenges of the dissertation project, including both general issues and those particular to your project. Group meetings You will also be involved in at least two group meetings (in the taught part of your degree programme) and other activities designed to support your development as a member of an academic community There will be one group meeting in each semester. The first group meeting will take place in week 4 of Semester 1. The second group meeting will take place in week 5 of Semester 2 The group meetings will be scheduled to last between 30 and 50 minutes. The group meetings will be scheduled by the Programme Director in coordination with the Personal Tutors. The first group meeting will introduce you to second semester optional courses, present careers information and discuss revision and examination techniques. The meeting will also include a reiteration of the advice on plagiarism given during Induction Week and encouragement to attend English language courses, if appropriate. At the second group meeting you will be given advice on sourcing your dissertation project. As you enter one of the busiest periods of the programme, there will be a discussion of time management and revision strategies.
