The School of Mathematics is looking for continuing students to sign up to become Clan Leaders in our new Math Clans initiative. Are you a School of Maths student in Year 2? Are you interested in meeting new people? Do you want to create a welcoming, supportive environment for incoming students who join us? Become a Student Cohort Representative and help build an amazing atmosphere within your Maths community. Previously known as MathClans, continuing students take a lead in supporting a cohort of incoming students settle into the School of Mathematics community. As a Student Cohort Rep, you would volunteer to organise a few events throughout the year to help incoming students settle into University life. What are Student Cohort Reps? Student Cohort Reps are Undergraduate students in Year 2, who volunteer to support incoming undergraduate students in joining the School of Mathematics community. In the new Student Support System, all students will be organised into groups known as ‘Cohorts’ and led by named Academic Cohort Leads. As a Student Cohort Representative you will: Support Academic Cohort Leads at community events. Organise a Year 1 focussed event for your cohort. Undertake the Edinburgh Award. Being a Student Cohort Rep is a voluntary position and should fit around your academic and outside responsibilities. All Student Cohort Representatives undertake training as part of the requirements of the Edinburgh Award. This is will begin in October. What do Student Cohort Reps do? Student Cohort Reps help incoming students settle into the School of Mathematics community by being a friendly face at community events for new students throughout the year. Helping students with academic or pastoral issues is not a part of the Student Cohort Rep role, this will be provided by the School of Mathematics. Understanding when and how to refer a student to the Student Support and Academic team will be a part of the Student Cohort Rep training, delivered by the School of Mathematics Student Development Team.
