Authorised Interruption of Study and Withdrawal

Information about student interruption to study and withdrawal from university.

If it is agreed that a tutee should either have a period of interruption to studies (temporary) or should withdraw from the University (permanently), you should follow the procedure below, including steps to update the student's EUCLID record. It is important to make sure which of these two options is most appropriate and guidance may be found at the following links:

Important Considerations for Students

Taking an Authorised Interruption of Study may have financial and/or VISA implications for students. Personal Tutors and the Student Support Team should encourage students to speak with an advisor at the Edinburgh University Students’ Association Advice Place who can provide independent advice about the potential implications of taking an interruption.

For students with a Tier 4 visa, we recommend students contact Edinburgh Global and the Student Immigration Service for advice in Authorised Interruption of Studies.

Special Circumstances procedures and decisions are dealt with completely independently from the request for an Authorised Interruption of Studies. See relevant pages for Special Circumstances for further information.

Process

Requesting an Authorised Interruption of Studies

  1. Personal tutor's should complete the 'Authorised Interruption of Study Request Form'.
  2. Once the form is completed, please email the form to the School of Mathematics Concessions Mailbox (MathematicsConcessions@ed.ac.uk) . These are logged by the Student Support Team for consideration by the Academic lead(s).
  3. Once a decision has been made, the Academic lead(s) will email the Personal Tutor with a decision on the AIS request. If approved, the Student Support Team will notify the student and the Personal Tutor will follow the 'Processing the AIS/Withdrawal in EUCLID' steps below.

Requesting a Withdrawal

A withdrawal is a permanent decision by a student to discontinue their studies here at the University of Edinburgh. Students can choose to withdraw at any time. All that is necessary is a definite clear written statement written to their Personal Tutor or any member of the Student Support Team.
