Changing your degree

There are many reasons why you may consider changing your degree programme. All students who wish to explore a degree transfer into a Mathematics programme should read the guidance below.

First steps before considering a Degree Transfer

If you are considering applying to transfer your degree programme, there are a number of important steps you should complete before applying:

1. Speak to your Student Adviser

You should discuss the possibility of a transfer with your Student Adviser in the first instace. They will be able to discuss with you your reasons for wanting a transfer and help you review whether you meet the pre-requisites for the degree programme you wish to transfer onto. The may also refer you to your Academic Cohort Lead who will be able to provide any academic guidance required.

2. Funding and Finances

For all transfers of a degree programme, you are responsible for contacting your loan authorities or funding bodies in advance of any change. Even transfers between closely related subjects should be notified. It is not guaranteed that your funding will continue automatically.

3. International Students with Student Visas

If you are an international student with a student visa seeking any change of programme, then you should consult the Student Immigration Service on the implications for your visa. You can find further information about the way in which a change of programme may affect your visa here: Changes to your studies | Student Immigration Services.

Applying for a Degree Transfer

Transfers into the School of Mathematics for the 2024/2025 Academic Year

If you are interested in applying to transfer onto a School of Mathematics degree programme, you are welcome to submit a request at the end of the academic year (July 2024). Each transfer request will be considered in its own right then.

The transfer application window for 2025/26 entry into the School of Mathematics will run from Tuesday 1st to Thursday 31st July 2025.  Transfer requests will not be accepted throughout the rest of the year.

Please be aware that there are no guarantees that requests will be granted due to limits on the overall number of places available, and the particular student number constraints of subject areas.

Types of Degree Transfers

There are three types of degree transfers that can be considered:

  • transferring between degree programmes within the School of Mathematics;
  • transferring into the School of Mathematics from a different School;
  • transferring into a different School from the School of Mathematics.

Transfers Mid-Session

Transfers will only be permitted at the start of the academic year: no mid-session transfers will be allowed. The only exception to this is transferring between the BSc Mathematics and MMath Mathematics degrees, where a decision is often made mid-session. If you want to discuss transfers of this kind, please contact your Student Adviser in the first instance.

Approval and Conclusion

You should receive an email notifying you of the decision from the relevant School or College officer dealing with the transfer.

If successful, and you are happy with the transfer to proceed, then your degree programme will be updated on EUCLID by the Student Support team. A new Student Adviser and Academic Cohort Lead will also be allocated if you are transferring from an outside School into the School of Mathematics.
