Getting a National Insurance Number

National Insurance Numbers

All staff employed in the UK, whether UK, European or international citizens, need a National Insurance Number (NI number). The NI number makes sure that the NI contributions and tax you pay are properly recorded against your name. It also acts as a reference number when communicating with the Government Department for Work and Pensions and HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC).

As you will be employed as a tutor, you must apply for a NI number if you do not already have one. UK nationals receive a NI number automatically at the age of 16. If you’re moving to the UK, you can only apply once you’re here. You must have the right to work or study in the UK to get a NI number.

Further information on how to apply, and what to do if you’ve lost your NI number, is available at: https://www.gov.uk/apply-national-insurance-number
