School programme

General

The Tutor support team is always available for questions and discussion.

You should also consider the course team attached to a course you are tutoring as another source of support. The course secretary is able to answer questions about the administration of the course, and the course organiser ultimately has the responsibility to make sure that the delivery of the course runs smoothly. If you have questions directly about how tutoring or marking should be done or organised, these are often best directed towards someone in the course team.

Year 1
  • Induction meeting – This mandatory training will usually take place in the week before you start teaching. This will equip you with techniques for teaching small-groups, and for marking and giving feedback on student work. You may be invited to attend further training specific to the courses you are teaching.
  • Observation and discussion – One of the PG Tutor support team will arrange to observe you teaching, and meet with you afterwards to discuss how you are getting on. You will get feedback on your teaching.
Later
  • Peer Review – Each tutor should both observe and be observed. This will help you to develop your ideas about what is effective in teaching. Each observation should be followed by a discussion, and both tutors will complete a short form recording their thoughts.
  • External recognition via the EdTA – The School organises local support for those interested in pursuing the EdTA and gaining external recognition of their engagement in teaching. The work you do as a tutor easily meets the criteria for Category 1 – awarding Associate Fellowship. An application consists of three reflective essays summing to no more than 1400 words, a brief summary of your teaching activity and one letter of support.
