Alumni Showcase
Friday, 29 September 2023
In Semester 1, we were proud to hold our first, in-person Alumni Showcase since 2019 and we were so happy to see so many of you there. A number of our lovely Alumni spoke on their experiences since entering the world of work and how their time at the University of Edinburgh prepared them for their next steps.
Listening to both our Undergraduate and Postgraduate panels, it was wonderful to hear about the wealth of roles and unique experiences our Alumni have had. There was a Q&A at the end of each panel and current students were also able to chat with the Alumni speakers and staff at the networking event at the end.
Thank you to all Alumni who spoke, all current students who attended and all staff who supported. We look forward to next year!
Undergraduate Collaborative Dissertation Writing Workshops
Monday, 5 February to Friday, 9 February 2024
The sign-up for the Undergraduate 'Collaborative Dissertation Writing Workshops' for Years 4 and 5 is now live, sign-up is on first served basis as there are limited spaces to each workshop. This is a brilliant opportunity to get some input into how to write your dissertation and in the past students have found them very useful - even students that have English as a first language learnt new things!
The collaborative workshops will run on:

The workshops will all take place in JCMB in Room 5205 apart from Wednesday which will be in Room 5326.

Flexible Learning Week Challenges
Monday, 19 February to Friday, 23 February 2024
Flexible Learning Week takes place every year in February and gives you the opportunity to take advantage of a wide range of events that run throughout the University of Edinburgh.
Here in the School of Maths, during Flexible Learning Week, we offer the opportunity to learn new transferable skills as well as develop a wide range of skills that you didn’t even know you had! You will do this by engaging with a week-long challenge where the School of Maths partners with Industry to present to you a real-world problem. This an invaluable opportunity to get a real sense of the dynamics of working in industry as part of a team. By participating in the Challenges, you will:
- Develop problem-solving, time management, teamwork and project management skills;
- Have an invaluable experience to add to your C.V. and discuss at interview;
- Gain a chance to work on a real-world problem with industry;
- Make an impact to the challenge partner;
- And so much more!
Where in previous years this has only be available to Masters students, this year we are excited to announce that we will be running a second challenge for Undergraduate students. Both challenges will take place in the week beginning the 19th of February. Registration is now open, sign-up below!
The UG Challenge is focussed on how Mathematical knowledge and practice can be applied to a real-world problem, where you will work alongside other Maths students to research, plan and deliver your solution to a panel of judges. The UG Challenge is for Year 3, 4 and Year 5 students.
This year we are partnering with the University's Estates Department on a challenge that focuses on the use of data to model and forecast energy production to support sustainablility.
You will be placed in teams to tackle the problem over the course of Flexible Learning Week and present their findings, ideas and thoughts at the end of the week. One team will be selected by a panel of judges based on their presentations and this winning team shall receive a prize at a reception!

The MSc Challenge is an interdisciplinary challenge where you will work alongside other MSc students from other Schools you will research, plan and deliver your solution to the panel of judges.
Last year for the MSc Challenge we partnered with SaxaVord Space Port UK. Groups for students from 4 different Schools tackled a biodiversity and satellite imaging problem. The teams all were given the same problem but approached it in a different ways, playing to their skills and at times teaching each other new techniques! They were supported by the Student Development Team, Student Advisers, Academic staff as well as representatives from SaxaVord.
The challenge was very interesting! You can collaborate with wonderful people from other departments and discover new things about yourself.
This year we are partnering with Space Intelligence on a challenge that focuses on the use Earth Observation to support sustainable land use.
You will be placed in teams to tackle the problem over the course of Flexible Learning Week and present their findings, ideas and thoughts at the end of the week. One team will be selected by a panel of judges based on their presentations and this winning team shall receive a prize at a reception!
