Course Selection and Timetabling

Guidance on how to select optional courses

Semester 1 Course Selection

You will be enrolled automatically on the compulsory courses for your programme. To select optional courses, please follow these steps:

Step 1: Identify your compulsory courses and calculate how many optional course credits you can take

  • You can use the School of Mathematics Degree Programme Tables (DPT) or the University's Degree Regulations and Programmes of Study (DRPS)  to do this.

  • Please note that, to complete your MSc, you must undertake 180 credits. Your dissertation will count for 60 credits, and taught courses will account for the remaining 120 credits. At least 90 taught credits must be at SCQF Level 11.

  • Consider the balance of credits across Semester 1 and Semester 2. We advise taking 60 credits in each semester wherever possible.

Step 2: Browse your course options on the DPT and PATH

  • To find out more about optional courses, look at the School of Mathematics Degree Programme Tables (DPTs).
  • You can also use PATH. When using PATH, look out for the colour coding system:
    • Subjects in blue are available for you to choose.

    • Subjects in red are unavailable for you to choose - however, please be aware that some courses will show as red in the system even though you are qualified to take them because the system assumes that you do not meet the prerequisites. Please consult the 'Requirements' tab for the course on PATH.  If you are unsure about a course and whether or not you are qualified to take it, please discuss this with your Student Adviser or Academic Cohort Lead.

    • Subjects in green are courses that you have already selected and that meet your programme requirements.

PLEASE NOTE: You cannot submit your course choices through PATH - please see Step 4 for further information about the way in which you can submit your choices and we will enrol you on your courses.

Step 3: Check for timetable clashes

  • Use the Timetable Browser to look out for timetable clashes. (Please be aware that the timetable may be revised before the beginning of semester.)

Step 4: Complete and submit your course choice form

  • You will be given and asked to complete a physical course choice form during Welcome Week. (You will be sent a copy of this form in advance by email so that you can start thinking about your choices before you arrive in Edinburgh.)

  • There will be lots of support available to help you complete the form during Welcome Week:

    • We will be holding a PGT Course Choice Fair on the afternoon of Monday 9th September (please see the Welcome Week timetable for further information).

    • There will be a number of opportunities for you to discuss your choices with academic staff, and with your Academic Cohort Lead in particular.

  • You will be able to enrol on your courses either by attending one of the in person course enrolment sessions we will be running during the week (please see the Welcome Week timetable for further information), or by handing your completed form (checked by your Academic Cohort Lead) into the Student Support Office or Maths Teaching Organisation (MTO).

  • Semester 1 course choices can be changed until the Friday of Week 2 of Semester 1. However, starting  Week 1 with a confirmed set of choices will ensure that you have the best possible start to your programme.

Semester 2 Course Selection

You will be asked to select courses for the entire year at start of Semester 1. However, if, come Semester 2, you wish you change some of your choices, you will be able to do so in Weeks 1 and 2 of the Semester.

If you are arriving late

Please contact us so that we are aware that you will be arriving late, letting us know your estimated date of arrival. As soon as they are available, we will upload recordings from the various Welcome Week events to the Learn page 'PGT Mathematics Students 24-25' to help you 'catch up'.
