Your year of study, grades, and the ability to speak the language of the country you are visiting are factors in deciding if you can go on an exchange. Year of study Exchanges take place during Year 3 for students on BSc programmes, and during Year 4 for students on an integrated masters (MMath) programme. Note that this is about the year of programme, not your year of attendance (the two are different for, for example, direct entry students). Please discuss with your Academic Cohort Lead in the first instance. Grades In order to be considered for an exchange, students on a BSc or MA wishing to undertake a non-compulsory Year Abroad in Year 3 should have achieved 'A' grades in the following courses: Introduction to Linear Algebra* Proofs and Problem Solving* Calculus and its Applications* Several Variable Calculus and Differential Equations Fundamentals of Pure Mathematics (* or Direct Entry equivalents - Accelerated Proofs and Problem Solving & Accelerated Algebra and Calculus for Direct Entry) Students on the MMath wishing to undertake a non-compulsory Year Abroad in Year 4 should have: a) achieved 'A' grades in the following courses: Introduction to Linear Algebra* Proofs and Problem Solving* Calculus and its Applications* Several Variable Calculus and Differential Equations Fundamentals of Pure Mathematics (* or Direct Entry equivalents - Accelerated Proofs and Problem Solving & Accelerated Algebra and Calculus for Direct Entry) AND b) achieved at least 70% in the four Honours courses: Honours Analysis Honours Differential Equations Honours Algebra Honours Complex Variables Language Any student who will study in a language other than English must provide evidence of their language level, demonstrating a minimum of level B2 (according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages). If this evidence is not provided, a language test will need to be taken. Check carefully in what language your chosen destination will teach. This article was published on 2025-02-26
