This event will be an opportunity for you to meet the Head of School, the Director of Teaching, the Director of Students and others, and will provide you with background information about the School, your degree programme, and what you can expect while you are studying with us. We will also confirm you attendance on campus during the session. At the end of the session, you will have an opportunity to ask questions.

The session is for new School of Mathematics students only. This includes Year 1 students, Direct Entry Year 2 students, and the small number of students who are joining us in Year 3 of their studies.  The session will be recorded and added to the 'Getting Started with your Maths Degree' Learn page.

This Q&A will be hosted by our Director of Teaching, Dr Richard Gratwick, and is for those students who have already been enrolled to do Direct Entry into the School (that is to enter directly into Year 2).

(Please note that this session is not for students who are currently enrolled in Year 1, but are considering moving to Year 2. Students in this position should attend the separate 'Direct Entry Information Session' on Tuesday 10th September (please see below)).

Students attending this should also attend the New Students Welcome Talk beforehand at 11:00.

The session will be recorded and added to the 'Getting Started with your Maths Degree' Learn page.

This meeting will provide you with an opportunity to meet your Student Adviser and Academic Cohort Lead (ACL). You will also have a one-to-one meeting with each of them during the semester. The names of your designated Students Adviser and ACL will be available in your student record shortly.

We will provide information about the times and locations of meetings in the table below over the next couple of weeks - but if you are in any doubt about the arrangements for your meeting, please come to the Student Support Office (JCMB, Room 6203) and we will be able to help you get to the right place.

UG ACL meeting schedule - Tuesday 10th September

Time: Walk 14:00 -15:30, refreshments 15:30 - 16:30

Location: Meet at the circular plaza outside JCMB. Refreshments will be provided in the JCMB Magnet Cafe

An optional short walk up Blackford Hill to relax and meet your new peers and some staff members (both Academic and Professional Services) and get a great view of Edinburgh! It will be led by some of the School's Student Advisers and is open to all new School of Mathematics students.

Please wear appropriate shoes and clothing. Moderate fitness is required. If you have walking or mobility issues, or any other concerns, please do speak to us in advance.

This event is for Widening Participation (WP) students. We will contact the students who are eligible to attend this session directly (and ask about any dietary requirements).

The event is to welcome our WP students to the University; introduce you to the School of Mathematics; give you an opportunity to meet with your peers and School staff; and hopefully make your transition to University easier. There will be an information session followed by a tour of the King's Buildings Campus, and we will end with an informal lunch.

The University defines WP as follows:

• WP students are individuals - their academic potential and experiences are unique to them, regardless of their background. So while we talk about a group of students, we acknowledge that the WP tag is just one of many varied markers an individual might identify with.  
• Primary and Secondary school pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds - this is based on area deprivation measures such as SIMD (Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation); those in receipt of free school meals; those from schools with low progression into HE; and those from schools with low attainment.  
• Adult learners and returners to education undertaking the SWAP Access course; Higher Nationals at College; and the Centre for Open Learning Access Course.   
• Vulnerable or more marginalised groups of students such as young carers; young people in care or care leavers; learners with refugee / asylum-seeker status; and estranged students.

These events are for returning School of Mathematics students. 

These events will be coordinated by your Year Organiser, with additional input from the Head of School, Director of Teaching and Director of Students.

These events will be recorded, so if you are unable to attend the session, you can watch it at a later date. The recording will be added to your Year group Learn page after the event.

A drop-in session for any School of Mathematics students who have not yet enrolled on their courses, or have queries about their course enrollments, including wanting to make changes.

Date: Friday 15th September

Time: 5 sessions (1.5 - 2 hours) between 09:00-17:00.  If you are in any doubt about which session you should attend, please come to the Student Support Office (JCMB 6203) and we will be able to advise you.

Locations: Rooms 3217, 1206c JCMB. Lunch (pizza) will be provided between 13:00 and 14:00 in the JCMB Magnet Cafe.

This session will help you to identify the key skills required to succeed with your Mathematics degree, and get the most out of your workshops during the academic year. Your Academic Cohort Lead (ACL) will be there to support you as you undertake a task, so the session will provide another opportunity for you to connect with them. It will also give you a chance to meet other students and to work collaboratively.

The session is for new School of Mathematics students. This session will not be recorded.
