Student Development academic, transferable and professional skills support and resources for Undergraduate students

The Student Development Team is here to support you on your skills and professional development journey as you progress through your university experience. We'll be working alongside you from your first year with us as you settle into university, through to your final year as you transition into the professional world, further study or another path entirely.

Where to start

It's never too soon to start thinking about what you want to do next, whether that’s this week, this academic year or when you leave university. After all, it’s your life and your future and we encourage you to proactively engage with all the opportunities available to make it the best experience you can have. We’re here to help you to develop your academic, transferable and professional skills to make the most of your degree and beyond.

Start by looking at the advice for your year (Pre-honours or Honours). This will give you some tips on how to make the most of your time and things you can do each year to build your skills and boost your employability.

The Skills Development Hub is the ideal place to find out more about the transferable and professional skills we know employers value so highly. We have built a repository of recommended online resources which are designed to deepen your understanding and inspire you to work on your own development goals. These resources focus on the University's Graduate Attributes and the key transferable skills that will aid both your academic and professional development.

Student Development events and workshops run throughout the academic year, giving you guidance on how to develop your skills, opportunities to apply and reflect on them, as well as the chance to build networks with both potential employers and other students. There are a range of activities, including Employability Tuesday, the School of Maths Edinburgh Award in Community Building, skills development workshops and many, many more!

And finally, you can find links to resources provided by the Careers Service in the Your Future Career pages, including worksheets, video clips and other websites with useful advice.
