Extensions and Special Circumstances

The procedures and application process for extensions and special circumstances.

The University is committed to supporting you during your studies. Therefore, if there are circumstances beyond your control that are having or have had an adverse effect on your performance in your assessments during the Semester, you may wish to apply for a coursework extension and/or special circumstances.

Extensions and Special Circumstances explained

  • Extensions- where there are circumstances that are affecting your ability to complete your coursework on time, and where late submissions are allowed on the assessment by the School, you can apply for an extension.
  • Special Circumstances- where there is evidence to show that there are circumstances that had a significant adverse impact on your performance in an assessment, or resulted in non-attendance or a non-submission for a scheduled assessment, you can submit an application to have these circumstances considered.

Who should I talk to before making an application?

Your Student Adviser is your first point of contact should you need additional support and would like to discuss your circumstances. They will be able to advise you on your individual situation, help you access additional support if necessary and guide you through the process of submitting your application for an extension and/or special circumstances.

If applying for Special Circumstances, we strongly advise that you contact the Student Support Team at studentsupport@maths.ed.ac.uk to discuss your application before you submit your application.

How do I apply?

You need to apply using a new online system via MyEd. All applications for Extensions and Special Circumstances will be processed through this system by a dedicated central Extensions and Special Circumstances (ESC) Team. Guidance for applying using the online system can be found here:

The ESC team will consider your application carefully and update the system once a validity decision has been reached. Please note: the outcome will be provided within the system and you will need to log in to see the validity decision on your dashboard.

Deadline for Special Circumstances applications

As per section 3.1 of the Special Circumstances Policy, you should submit your application as soon as possible, and not more than a week after your final assessment for the semester.

Following the semester 1 examination diet, the final date for School of Mathematics special circumstances applications for Semester 1 is the 11th of January 2023 at 12pm.

The ESC service will only consider accepting submissions after this deadline where students provide evidence of exceptional reasons for having been unable to submit on time. No late applications will be considered after the deadline for the publication of ratified marks as set out in the University Key Dates.
